A superb low tech, portable tool for triage, assessment and ongoing management of pain levels for those who have either English as a second language or who are non-verbal. Developed from an identified need by UK healthcare professionals to meet the needs of one inpatient, and then following further review of their current pain management practice. It promotes inclusion and supports the person-centred care planning approach. More information below.

This pain scale communication device evolved initially in response to a care team meeting the needs of a non-verbal paediatric patient with severe learning difficulties who during admission to a UK hospital needed to be able to express his levels of pain.

The tool's development had multi-disciplinary professional input and prompted a wider evaluation of current practice. The goal was to ensure patient centred care for those with communication difficulties by providing alternative ways for patients to express pain levels, instead of relying on commonly-used observer rated pain assessment which can result in unrelieved pain and ineffective management.

This magnetic, low-tech, portable tool has a colour graded scale slider. Features Widgit® symbols selected by professionals "Pain", "Medicine", "Doctor", "Feeling Sick", "Dry Mouth/Thirsty", "Injection", "Uncomfortable", "Dizzy". Yes/No sticker is provided with a scale of 1-5 on reverse side. Can be adapted with your own symbols, words, photographs or pictures.

Also useful for those with English as a second language. Non-slip rubber feet and protective washable case. Size: 22x17x20cm. Tile size: 3.7cm2.
